New Mexico psych duo Tan Cologne prep debut LP (listen to first single), touring
Tan Cologne, the duo of Lauren Green (ex Mirror Travel) and interdisciplinary artist Marissa Macias, are undeniably a New Mexico group and their hometown of Taos informs their dusty, sun-baked brand of dreampop with elements of ancient mysticism, alien visitors and desert topography. The pair caught the attention of Swedish label Labrador (The Radio Dept, The Mary Onettes, The Legends) who will release Tan Cologne’s debut album, Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico, on February 14, 2020. We’ve got the premiere of the album’s swirling, laconic title track, which they told us a little about:
The title track, “Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico,” was grafted from Taos Composer Joanne Forman’s 1987 soundscape. Her composition “Cave Vaults of The Moon” accompanied a sculpture exhibition in Taos, NM on imagined alien artifacts – a resonant investigation and scent of Tan Cologne. The song speaks of otherworldly and geologic observations of New Mexico. In Taos, there is a legend of a “hum” that rises from the Earth. Some people claim to constantly hear or sense it. This concept is referenced as the lyrics “bury the sound down below.” The following lyrics “moon underground, moon above” references the feeling of New Mexico being the moon. Oftentimes, the landscapes of New Mexico mirror otherworldly and other planetary visions and almost feels like a waltz between the different worlds – this is also referenced within the song’s cadence and rhythm.
The video for the song, directed by Wes Sheridan, documents the “colliding worlds and subcultures around Northern New Mexico, most notably the ones that exist orbiting within Taos. A moon or planet like no other.” Watch that below.
The band will be on tour in November, beginning with a hometown Taos show opening for Kikagaku Moyo, plus dates in Texas (including Austin’s Levitation festival) and Mexico. All dates are listed below.
