new music from Melvins, Wreck & Reference & (sorta) Behemoth ++ upcoming NYC shows from Kayo Dot, Satan's Satyrs, Netherlands & more

For those of you who still have a hangover from Maryland Deathfest, maybe the last thing you want to hear about is more metal shows. But the heavy world turns, and the shows keep coming. Catch up on our MDF coverage, and here’s a roundup of some upcoming NYC metal shows, new music, festivals, and more.

As always, Saint Vitus is hosting a ton of stuff that covers a huge range of heavy music. Sludgy local noise crew Netherlands, who just premiered a new video over at Invisible Oranges, have a record release show at Saint Vitus on June 16. Support for that show is provided by Walter Schreifels’ psych band Dead Heavens, King Pussy Face and Gull. Tickets for that are on sale now.

Australian weirdos King Parrot will be over in the US, playing a show with great support from Child Bite, Black Black Black and Cetus on June 29. Tickets for that are on sale now.

On July 1, brutal death metal crew Funebrarum will stop by for a single-mindedly filthy show with Scorched and Putrisect. Tickets for that are on sale now.

Over at Brooklyn’s other metal church, The Acheron, there will be a couple opportunities to catch some heavy grooves. Virginia stoner metal outfit Satan’s Satyrs, who feature a member of Electric Wizard, have a show on July 3 with The Golden Grass, Tower and Vimana, so you can ring in the 4th of July on a (literal) high note (tickets). A few days later, local stoners La Otracina offer the opportunity to get your heavy groove on with Fox 45 and Company Corvette on July 6 (tickets).

For those of you who prefer things on the artier side, UK black/death metal crew Sanhedrin are playing at The Acheron on June 11, where they’ll be joined by Insect Ark (the experimental project of Dana Schechter), along with Aerial Ruin and Nathanael LaRochette. Tickets for that are on sale now.

Metal/noise experimentalists Kayo Dot have a new album on the way, and they’ve scheduled a release show that goes down at Mercury Lounge on July 8. Tickets for that are on sale now.

Also, in case you’re keeping up with all the lame hard rock/metal festivals Slayer and Anthrax are playing this year, they were recently announced for Louisville’s Louder Than Life, along with The Cult, Cheap Trick, Ghost, Clutch and more.

That about does it for shows you haven’t heard about, but if you thought that you were out of the woods, think again. There are a few new releases to talk about. Industrial/noise metal outfit Wreck and Reference have a new album on the way, which is called Indifferent Rivers Romance End and is out on July 22 via the label home of all such things The Flenser. They’ve just premiered a new song called “Powders” from that and its a slow-building, thoughtful, screamo-inflected piece of IDM. (Yep, in Wreck & Reference’s world, that’s a thing.) Stream it below (via Tinymixtapes).

Road warriors/sludge stalwarts The Melvins are busy as ever, and they recently premiered their new, 6-bassist album Basses Loaded over at mlb.com (!). You can stream that below.

Want to get excited, possibly for little to no reason? We might be getting new Behemoth music in the near future (the operative word here being “might”), as frontman Nergal just shared a video from the studio that gives us about a minute of new Behemoth music. It’s a hardcore-inflected d-beat jam that certainly whets the appetite for stuff from these guys, who can hopefully keep up the creative high from 2014’s absolutely incredible The Satanist. Check out that video below.

Richmond doom metal crew Cough just released their excellent new LP Still They Pray, and we gave it a positive assesment in this week’s Five Notable Releases. Suffice it to say here that it’s a done-right piece of Electric Wizard-worship, and you can stream it below.

Check out even more new metal in this week’s Upcoming Metal Releases column on Invisible Oranges, which this week highlighted new stuff from Virus, Sapaudia, Candlemass, Gevurah and a bunch of other stuff.

Finally, let’s burn through some reminders of great NYC heavy shows that we’ve already brought up. On the docket, we’ve got Metal Allegiance, Monolord, Cannibal Corpse/Suffocation/Nile/Revocation, Cobalt/Mantar, Dalek/Tombs/Couch Slut/Yellow Eyes, Destroyer 666/Ares Kingdom/Mutilation Rites, Big Business, Tribulation, Theories/Immortal Bird, and Russian Circles/Helms Alee.

You want one more paragraph? You got it. Don’t forget about Valkyrie, Mutoid Man, Minsk/Bloodiest, Wolves in the Throne Room, Boris/Earth, Pilgrim/Castle/Blizaro, Wax Idols/King Woman, Gojira, Inter Arma/Withered, Gone is Gone, Krieg/Angmar, Deftones/Refused/Spotlights, Come to Grief/Ilsa/Belus, Carcass/Ghoul/Crowbar/Night Demon, Nails/Full of Hell, and last but not least, DragonForce!!!.

That about does it. Check out music from Cough, Behemoth, La Otracina, Satan’s Satyrs, Melvins, Funebrarum, and Wreck and Reference, below.
