New Order and Peter Hook finally settle legal disputes

Peter Hook and his former New Order bandmates have settled their disputes which have been going ever since he split from the band. Peter Hook claimed that when New Order set up a company to handle finances of New Order and Joy Division, they were shorting him to the tune of $3.5 million; meanwhile the members of New Order (Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert) contested Hook’s use of New Order and Joy Division assets in promoting his tours as Peter Hook & The Light (where he has performed and continues to peform full albums by his former bands). It’s all behind them now, officially, so says this statement from New Order this morning:

New Order announce that today, a full and final settlement has been reached in the long running disputes with their former bassist Peter Hook.

The disputes were based upon Hook’s use of various New Order and Joy Division assets on merchandising and in the promotion of shows by his new band, and the amount of money he receives from the use of the name New Order by his former colleagues since 2011.

The Joy Division and New Order names mean a great deal to so many of the fans, and the band felt it important to protect the legacy.

With these issues now dealt with, Bernard, Stephen and Gillian can continue to do what they do best, make music and perform live.

Now everybody can be happy again. New Order just played Riot Fest and Hollywood Bowl; Peter Hook released a very entertaining memoir about his years in New Order and will tour both the New Order and Joy Division versions of Substance in 2018.
