New Order documentary ‘Decades’ coming to Showtime (watch the trailer)

New Order played a very special show at the 2017 Manchester International Festival where they “deconstructed, rethought and rebuilt” songs from their catalogue,  playing alongside a “12-strong synthesizer ensemble from the Royal Northern College of Music, with Mancunian composer Joe Duddell, conducting and providing the orchestrations.” The set featured a lot of songs that New Order hadn’t played in years, or even decades. The show was filmed and, along with new interviews, is the basis for new documentary New Order: Decades which has shown at a few film festivals this year and will makes its wide release debut via Showtime on December 27. Here’s the synopsis:

Part concert, part documentary, this film follows the band’s preparations in the re-staging of their acclaimed collaboration, So It Goes, with the artist Liam Gillick and the 12-piece synthesizer orchestra that spectacularly captured the headlines during Manchester International Festival 2017. The complexities extend beyond the technical and logistical: this is a band that rarely looks backward, yet for this project, they had to reflect on – and deconstruct – the band’s history, in order to create something very new.

You can watch the trailer below, and check out a few pictures of the show in the gallery above.

The Manchester International Festival show has also become a live album, ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order Liam Gillick: So it goes.., which you can listen to below.

New Order be in the U.S. for a Miami residency in January 2020 and will head to Japan and Australia in March.
