NPR lists the 200 Greatest Songs By 21st Century Women+

Grimes at The Meadows 2016 - Saturday
Grimes at The Meadows 2016 (more by P Squared)

Last year, NPR Music made a list of the 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women, and today they’re keeping the theme going with another list: “The 200 Greatest Songs By 21st Century Women+.” (They clarify: “Our list includes songs performed by women and non-binary artists. The use of the term ‘Women+’ is part of our engagement in a movement to recognize a wide spectrum of gender identities coming to greater light in the 21st century.”)

The list spans all different genres, including pop, rap, R&B, country, indie rock, folk, electronic music, experimental music, punk, metal, and much more. The top 20 includes music by Adele, Beyonce, Grimes, Florence + the Machine, Mitski, Nicki Minaj, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Lana Del Rey, Solange, Janelle Monae, Lorde, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, M.I.A., and more, and you can see the full top 20 listed below. Elsewhere on the list, there’s music by Phoebe Bridgers, Windhand, Ciara, Tweet, Kelis, Azealia Banks, Taylor Swift, Julien Baker, Moor Mother, Jenny Hval, Big Thief, Hop Along, Joanna Newsom, Priests, G.L.O.S.S., Miley Cyrus, Big Freedia, Angel Olsen, Gwen Stefani, Babymetal, Princess Nokua, EMA, Eve, Evanescence, P!nk, Young M.A, ANOHNI, Rihanna, Sharon Van Etten, Regina Spektor, Grouper, Shakira, Waxahatchee, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Nelly Furtado, Tune-Yards, Margo Price, Vanessa Carlton, Feist, Downtown Boys, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, St. Vincent, Paramore, Courtney Barnett, SZA, Against Me!, Kesha, Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, Carly Rae Jepsen, and more.

For all 200 (and commentary on each one) head to NPR. What do you think of the list?

This list was rolled in in conjunction with NPR Music’s ‘Turning The Tables Live’ concert with Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Jamila Woods “[coming] together for a song circle, performing stripped-down versions of their original music and discussing modern popular-music culture with moderator Ann Powers.” I’m With Her (aka Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan) opens the show, which happens at NYC’s Damrosch Park on Wednesday (8/1) as part of Lincoln Center Out of Doors. It’s free.
