NYC comedy roundup: Kondabolu Brothers, Nore Davis, Jo Firestone & more
As always, there are tons of great live comedy options in NYC. We just wrote about some last week and here are some notable ones. Hari Kondabolu, who you may know from his TruTV documentary The Problem with Apu, has a podcast with his brother Ashok (aka Dapwell, formerly of Das Racist) called The Untitled Kondabolu Project. The podcast is now part of the Earwolf comedy podcast network (How Did This Get Made, Comedy Bang! Bang!, many more) and have a bunch of live tapings coming up at Littlefield on January 26 & 31, February 11 & 22, and March 18. No guests have been announced but tickets are on sale.
Hari Kondabolu is also part of “Puppets Presents: A Stand-Up Comedy Show” at Littlefield on January 25 with Butterboy co-hosts Jo Firestone and Aparna Nancherla, plus Janelle James (tickets). Yes, there are puppets: “Kelsey Caine and Carmen Lagala host a stand-up comedy show where comedians interact with puppets after their sets.”
Speaking of Aparna, she has a recurring role on Pete Holmes‘ semi-autobiographical HBO series Crashing which just started it’s second season. (Watch a preview below.) In addition to upcoming editions of her weekly show at Littlefield (there’s one tonight), Butterboy, she has a bunch of other appearances coming up. She’s part of Rob Cantrell’s comedy album release show at Littlefield on Sunday (1/21), and she’l also be the guest on the live taping of “The Sporkful Presents: Ask Mimi” at Union Hall on January 31 where she’ll talk with acclaimed 91-year-old food critic (and noted kale-hater) Mimi Sheraton and host Dan Pashman about a variety of edible topics (tickets).
Aparna will appear on “Tinder Live w/ Lane Moore” alongside John Friedman and Sally Kohn. It happens Valentine’s Day at Littlefield and tickets are on sale. Jo and Aparna are also hosting “Live & Order!” — a comedic tribute to crime drama Law & Order and its many spinoffs — at Union Hall on February 11 (sold out).
Meanwhile, Jo Firestone appears at the Brooklyn New School benefit at Littlefield on Wednesday (1/17) with Janeane Garofalo, David Cross, Joe Pera and more (tickets), as well as “Bushes B-Day Bash – a Comedy Show for Planned Parenthood” which happens at The Bell House on January 24 with Janeane Garofalo, Mary Houlihan, Sasheer Zamata, Dan Soder and hosts Lacey Jeka and Kristen Buckels (tickets).
Jo also is hosting “Friends of Single People” at Littlefield on February 3. It’s a “live dating show hosted by Jo Firestone where notable and accomplished comedians represent single strangers in an otherwise classic dating game.” Notable and accomplished comedians include Patrick Borelli, Ana Fabrega, Maeve Higgins, Kevin Iso, Conner O’Malley, Josh Rabinowitz, Gary Richardson, and Yamaneika Saunders (tickets). Still more Jo: she and Steven DeSiena are cohosting The Educated Guess Science Fair on February 28 at Littlefield: “Comedians Steven DeSiena and Jo Firestone challenge their favorite comedians to turn Littlefield into a school cafeteria for one night only in this grade school throwback.” No word on guests yet but tickets are on sale.
Nore Davis is taping a comedy album he’s going to call “Too Woke!” at Union Hall on February 16 across two performances. Aminah Imani will warm up the crowd at both shows and tickets are on sale. Before that, Nore will be a part of “Book Club: A Comedy show” at Union Hall on January 27 with Blythe Roberson, Colin Stokes, Joe Zimmerman, Rebecca O’Neal, and Jen Spyra (tickets).
Do you love late ’70s trucker action-comedies? If so, Stinker Lets Loose may be for you. It’s the Audible book to the novelization of nonexistent 1977 film Stinker Lets Loose which is described as “Smokey and the Bandit meets Every Which Way But Loose meets Smokey and the Bandit Parts 2 and 3, as Stinker teams up with Boner, Jumbo, Rascal the Chimp, and the whole gang for the ride of a lifetime! 10-4!” It stars Jon Hamm, Andy Richter, Andy Daly, Paul F Tompkins, Philip Baker Hall, and more. You can watch the trailer above. There’s a release party of Stinker Lets Loose at Union Hall on January 31 with Dave Hill, Mike Sacks, and C.J. McKnight & the Three Gentlemen. There may be special guests? Tickets are on sale.
Dave Hill is also hosting a show at The Cutting Room on February 1 starring 2 Dope Queens’ Phoebe Robinson, plus Ali Kolbert and Aparna Nancherla (she is not busy enough!). There’s also music from The Reformed Whores. Tickets are on sale. Two Dope Queens, Phoebe’s show with Jessica Williams, begins it’s short-series run on HBO on February 2.
Finally, Jena Friedman (The Daily Show), Dina Hashem (Conan), Margaret Champagne (Inside Amy Schumer) will be guests at Abby Feldman & Camille Theobald Present at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3 on January 20. Abby and Camille create songs based on their guests’ standup sets (tickets).
