NYC punk roundup: As Friends Rust, Defiance Ohio, NYHC book release, Gang Green, Timeshares, Night Birds, more

As Friends Rust

Like their Gainesville counterparts, Hot Water Music, As Friends Rust doesn’t give a damn what you think punk is about. They’ve broken it down to it’s original components: raw emotion, no bullshit riffage, and hooks galore. In their reconstruction, they’ve produced two of my favourite EPs, and now, a contender for my favourite release of the year.

Like their self-titled EP, and Fists of Time EP, this record combines aspects of punk, hardcore, and indie rock into a raw, angry sound that you must have known was from Gainesville. [Punk News]

The above quote is from Punk News’ review of Gainesville ’90s/’00s punks’ As Friends Rust‘s 2001 debut album, the only full length they put out before breaking up a year later. The band’s been reunited for a bit now, and they’re finally set to play their first NYC show in 7 years on April 30 at Saint Vitus with UnWed (mem Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike) and Pagan Girls. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Their only other announced date so far is Groezrock.

There are some other good NYC punk shows coming up that we haven’t mentioned yet too. Here’s a roundup of those:

Folk punks Defiance, Ohio are going on their first tour in about two years, with High Dive and Will from Defiance’s other band Purple 7. That hits NYC on March 18 at Shea Stadium, also with locals Milk Dick, making for an all-around great bil. Tickets for Shea go on sale at noon today (2/6). All dates are listed below.

You may know that a new NYHC book was published recently, and it’s getting a release show on March 1 at Grand Victory with three veteran bands. The lineup is headlined by The Nihilistics, who Trouser Press called “a stupid, obnoxious hardcore band from Long Island [whose] album is pretty good.” It also features reunion sets from the short-lived Altercation and The High & Mighty, whose first show in 30 years was at the old A7 (now Niagara) in December 2013. Tickets are on sale now.

Another veteran hardcore band hits that same venue when Gang Green play Grand Victory on April 18. That’s with Antagonizers ATL and Drug Shock. TIckets are on sale.

A show much sooner at Grand Vic (and with much newer bands) is the Chumped / Roger Harvey show happening this Sunday (2/8). Since we last spoke, Timeshares (who recently put out a split with Luther that you can stream below) were added too. Never open, and tickets are still on sale.

After that show, Chumped head out with Andrew Jackson Jihad, Jeff Rosenstock and The Smith Street Band, hitting NYC on March 20 at Warsaw. Tickets for that show are still available.

The day after Sunday’s Chumped show, you can get your punk fix at Bowery Electric (2/9) with NYC vets Murphy’s Law playing with The Bowery Boys and Simon and the Bar Sinisters.

Night Birds

Surf/skate punk lovers Night Birds headline a benefit for Ensign’s Nate Gluck (who’s sadly battling cancer) on March 29 at The Acheron with No Problem, Sonic Poison and Nuclear Santa Claust (who play the Don Giovanni showcases this weekend). Tickets are on sale. There’s also a stacked Nate Gluck tribute in NJ a week earlier.

Get nostalgic for some older skate punk when Guttermouth play Saint Vitus on March 16 with Counterpunch (tickets); and again when Pennywise play Irving Plaza on March 27 with A Wilhelm Scream and Teenage Bottlerocket (tickets).

Lastly (for now), three solid NYC hardcore bands, Warthog, Ajax and Raid, team up with DC’s Red Death on February 13 at 538 before Ajax head out on tour. $8 at the door.

Other upcoming punk shows in NYC include The Mob, The Dwarves, Title Fight, John Reis & The Blind Shake, Black & Blue Bowl, New York’s Alright, and more.
