Ohana Festival 2017 Friday pics (Pixies, TV on the Radio, Social Distortion, more)

The 2017 edition of Ohana Festival kicked off on Friday (9/8) at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, CA. Friday’s lineup included sets from Social Distortion, Pixies, TV on the Radio, Simon Townshend, The Orwells, and more. It also included a couple of surprise appearances from recent Twin Peaks: The Return performer Eddie Vedder, who performed a set of his own on Saturday (9/9). On Friday, he joined Townshend for “She Asked Me,” and Social Distortion for “Ball and Chain.” The Orange County Register says:

By 5 p.m., the sun was suddenly covered by clouds as British guitarist and singer-songwriter Simon Townshend was brought out on the Tiki Stage by Vedder.

“I’m getting chills right now,” Vedder said as he described Townshend as not only a great friend and artist, but someone who he has looked up to and admired as a musician. Townshend is the younger brother of the Who’s guitarist Pete Townshend and in the past has collaborated with the legendary rock act as well as Pearl Jam.

His set was simple, just a man and an acoustic guitar, but with a voice that was powerful and commanding. He played “The Way It Is,” which he prefaced by saying “you think it’s about trying to leave family, it ain’t, it’s about trying to work it out.” He also touched on his battle addiction and sobriety with the heavy track, “Denial.”

Pixies return to the East Coast soon for three NYC area shows: The Space at Westbury 9/22 (tickets), Stone Pony Summerstage 9/23 (tickets), and Capitol Theatre 9/24 (tickets)
