Other Music's Top 100 Best-Selling LPs of All Time

Iconic NYC record store Other Music has only week left. They recently posted their Top 100 Best Sellers in their 21 year existence, with Belle & Sebastian‘s 1996 classic If You’re Feeling Sinister topping the list, followed closely by Air‘s debut album Moon Safari (1998), Boards of Canada‘s debut, Music Has a Right to Children (also 1998), Kruder & Dorfmeister‘s inescapable (at the time) double mix The K&D Sessions (yep, 1998) and Yo La Tengo‘s 2000 LP And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out rounding out the Top 5. At #100 it’s The Avalanches‘ debut, Since I Left You. A picture of their entire Top 100, written on their very familiar whiteboard, is above.

If the lack of Beastie Boys or the low placing of Radiohead (#70 for Kid A) seems surprising, you have to remember that Tower Records was right down the street and by 1995 both acts were more Tower territory. OM was more DJ Shadow or (conspicuously absent) J. Dilla than the Beasties. If you’re in NYC this week, do make an effort to stop by Other Music before they close. (They’ve put out a bunch of the Steve Keene paintings they used to have up back in the day which are all pretty great.) Their “Other Music Forever” farewell party at Bowery Ballroom on 6/28 is sold out.

UPDATE: Other music has revised their list, saying:

This is the final and official lifetime top sellers list. After posting the previous version in the shop, we realized that there had been a couple of small errors in computation. Our computer system is so antiquated that we had to manually combine the sales of different formats, and especially with records that we carried as imports originally, or that were reissued a couple of times, it can get complicated. This revised version has a slightly different order of a few titles near the bottom of the list, and more notably, J Dilla’s Donuts and Arthur Russell’s Calling Our of Context — two Other Music classics — both make an appearance at 85 and 97, respectively.
