Panic ensued, briefly, at Saturday’s Global Citizen Festival in Central Park as the loud clap of a barrier wall falling was mistaken for gunshots and sent attendees fleeing at around 7:30 PM. At least seven people were hurt, reports the New York Daily News. Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who was onstage at the time, reassured the crowd, “What happened is a barrier I think fell down. Of course it caused people to be a bit frightened and stuff like that. But nobody is trying to hurt nobody. You are all safe,” adding, “When you guys are ready we can all watch Janet Jackson, which I know we all wanna fucking do.” NYPD’s assistant chief Kathleen O’Reilly came out and reiterated that it was a barrier collapse that caused the loud noise. The festival did go on, with Janet Jackson up next. Watch video of the incident, and Chris Martin below.
Some 60,000 people attended Global Citizen Festival, which promotes social activism, on Central Park’s Great Lawn to see Jackson, The Weeknd, Janelle Monae, Cardi B, John Legend, Shawn Mendes, and more.
