Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Florence & more set to appear in Terrence Malick's new film 'Song to Song' (out in March)

Terrence Malick & Ryan Gosling at FFF Fest 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)

Way back in 2011 filmmaker Terrence Malick was shooting at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest for a film that was then called Lawless and starring Ryan Gosling who shot scenes on-stage with YACHT, Big Freedia, Neon Indian and more. (The film later changed its working title to Weightless.) Fast-forward five-plus years and the film is now titled Song to Song and will be out March 17. (That date also falls during SXSW’s film festival which has yet to reveal its lineup.) Here’s the synopsis via Indiewire:

In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman) — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.

We’re not sure whether YACHT, Neon Indian and Big Freedia (or St. Vincent who was reported to have shot scenes) made the cut but Indiewire also reports that the film features cameos/performances from Patti Smith, Lykke Li, the Black Lips, Iggy Pop, Florence and the Machine, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. IMDB also lists Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer, John Lydon, Benicio Del Toro, Holly Hunter and others in the cast.

Mind you, we may not know who is actually in the film till it’s released — Malick famously edited out performances by Gary Oldman, Viggo Mortensen, Martin Sheen, Mickey Rourke and other notable actors from the final cut of 1998’s The Thin Red Line even after promo images of their scenes had been sent to the press.

If five-plus years working on a movie sounds like a long time, Malick is a noted perfectionist who only released four films between 1973’s Badlands and 2005’s The New World. We are very curious for this one. Stay tuned.
