Anyone remember #Pavement ?

Stephen Malkmus and his band The Jicks played two nights at San Francisco club The Chapel over the weekend (October 1 & 2) in celebration of his former Pavement bandmate Scott Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs)’s 50th birthday. On both nights Spiral Stairs joined the Jicks at the end of the sets for some Pavement tunes: On 10/1 they played “Date w/ IKEA,” “Kennel District” and “Summer Babe” (as well as “Falling Away” by Scott’s band Preston Schools of Industry); on 10/2 it was even more of a Pavement reunion as original wild-man drummer Gary Young joined them for “Lions (Linden)” and a requisite headstand. Minus Young, they also played “Stereo,” “Two States,” “Box Elder” and, again, “Date w/ IKEA” (which Kannberg sings lead).

The Jicks’ sets, both nights, were peppered with covers of Kannberg’s favorite songs, in including ones by The Clean, Meat Puppets, The Strangers, Echo & The Bunnymen (Scott used to be in a Bunnymen cover band with Kelley Stoltz), The Replacements, The Grateful Dead, and JJ Cale/Clapton nugget “Cocaine.”

Video of almost the entire 10/1 show, and video of “Box Elder” and the Gary Young reunion from the 10/2 show, as well as Instagrams, other video and setlists from both nights, are below.
