Peter Hook & The Light playing New Order's 'Technique' & 'Republic' in full on 2019 tour
Peter Hook & The Light have just announced a fall 2019 tour where they will play New Order’s 1989 album Technique and 1993 album Republic in full, plus “other tracks from the era” and an opening set of Joy Division material. Dates include shows in Philadelphia, NYC, Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, L.A., Austin, and Atlanta. The NYC show happens at Brooklyn Steel on October 25. Tickets for that show, and the whole tour, go on sale Friday, November 9.
Technique is a bona-fide classic, one of New Order’s best LPs, but it should be interesting to see what he does with Republic, a record that infamously doesn’t actually have much of Peter Hook’s signature bass-playing on it. In his book Substance: Inside New Order, he writes about the fights he had with Bernard Sumner making this LP, and how what bass there is on the record was mixed incredibly low. His playing, however, is central to the album’s hit single “Regret,” and standout cut “Special.” There was a big falling out over the record as to who actually did what on it, and and the band broke up shortly after. (They would reform five years later.) Maybe we’ll get to hear the version of Republic that Hook has always had in had mind?
It was also around this era that Peter Hook formed Monaco with David Potts, and had a hit with “What Do You Want From Me?” Potts is now the guitarist and main vocalist for The Light’s New Order material, so maybe we’ll get some Monaco too this time around?
