The home was the place where Coltrane wrote A Love Supreme, one of the greatest jazz compositions ever. There was a studio in the basement that certainly heard some of the greatest music of the 20th century. Sunday’s benefit at En Japanese Brasserie was a fun time for a great cause, namely to raise $85,000 to finish the restoration of the endangered John & Alice Coltrane home on Candlewood Path in Dix Hills in Huntington Town on Long Island, NY (just south of the LIE off exit 51). Over the last ten+ years, the efforts originally pioneered by Steve Fulgoni have blossomed into the reality that the home will be saved and fully restored. A new roof was recently put on along with other improvements and the home, which has had many water-related issues, is finally waterproof again. The intention is to turn the 3 acre property into a park and “restore the home to the way it was when the Coltrane family lived there and open it to the public as a historic home to educate children and all people about John and Alice Coltrane and their life’s mission to be a force for good through their music.”

Many dignitaries spoke such as ‘Friends of the Coltrane Home’ COO Ron Stein of Huntington Town and Dr. Cornel West whose impassioned, sermon-like speech taught us the religion of Coltrane. Carlos Santana gave a heartfelt tribute to the great Coltrane icons John & Alice. Steve Fulgoni discussed his efforts and the great assistance he has received along the way to his dream. Ravi Coltrane performed. Guests in the crowd included the legendary drummer Roy Haynes (now 88 years old) who sometimes filled in for Elvin Jones in Coltrane’s classic quartet from 1961-1965, Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Miller, Jimmy Heath, and Elvis Costello who added his signature to one of Santana’s guitars, which was being auctioned along with original artwork.
