Pink Floyd's comprehensive 'Later Years' box set chronicles David Gilmour era (listen)
To most people, the Pink Floyd canon can be divided into three distinct phases; the Syd Barrett era of the mid to late 60s, the post-Syd era led primarily by Roger Waters which roared well into the mid-80s, and the post-Waters era of 1985 to 1994 (and then 2014 with the release of The Endless River which was comprised of unused debris from 1994’s Division Bell and stuff recorded in 2013 and 2014). As one of the biggest Pink Floyd fans god ever shoveled guts into, I celebrate their entire catalog and staunchly endorse this three-tiered approach to understanding Pink Floyd’s almost 55-years of music.
Where I tend to tune out is when the argument turns to which era is most important. In their own particular ways, each phase of Pink Floyd’s career are as important as the others. The Syd-era brought an immense and unprecedented amount of aural, visual, and technical experimentation to music and live performance. The Roger Waters era created the gold standard for what heights a concept album could reach by filling them with scathing political and sociological criticisms as well as massive amounts of autobiographical narrative, while also rolling out some of the most audacious stadium concert experiences ever. The post-Waters era; well, that’s where Pink Floyd fans really start get a bit touchy. Although it could be argued that the Floyd never produced the caliber of music they did in the Waters era, I would argue that, musically, they produced an incredible amount of interesting, sonically consistent and patently Floydian sounds that I still listen to constantly. But where they really excelled in this era was with art direction, in terms of album and promotional design and superior technological innovation where stadium concert design is concerned.
As someone born in 1977, I grew up with the post-Waters era Floyd as it was released, so all of that stuff holds a massive amount of mystique and importance to me. I was beyond chuffed when it was announced that the Floyd would be releasing Pink Floyd The Later Years, a gargantuan 16-disc box set that mines the depths of the Pink Floyd era from 1987 onwards, on Friday December 13 (TODAY!). As they did with 2016’s unbelievably comprehensive gold mine Pink Floyd The Early Years, The Later Years is a grand multi-media survey that brings fans remastered albums and videos, never before seen footage, replica memorabilia, a 40-page hardcover book, 7″ records and even reproductions of tour books, all housed in a robust, heavy duty box outfitted with new artwork created just for this release. A lot of the video material featured is stuff I have never seen or, if I have, have only seen in grainy VHS bootlegs or super-pixelated YouTube videos. Highlights for me include:
- Full video of their 1989 Venice flotilla concert and their full Knebworth concert from 1990
- Restored version of Delicate Sound of Thunder which was originally shot on 35mm and should translate to HD beautifully
- The films they used to show at their concerts, originally projected on 70mm film
- So much behind the scenes and rehearsal footage. So much.
There will also be a 2-LP / 1-CD ‘Highlights’ package. It comes in a gatefold sleeve (for both 1-CD and 2-LP), and each will contain a 24-page booklet containing previously unseen and rare photos.
