The aroma of nostalgia fills the park as Digable Planets digs back to its ’90s heyday. Major props to the trio for bringing a five-piece band to reanimate its decades-old albums, which still sound tailor-mind for a breezy midsummer afternoon like this one. If the music feels out of step with these angry, conflicted times, Doodlebug makes sure to underline the group’s enduring perspective: “We think this is a beautiful world. Don’t let the ugly bring you down.” With its layers of Latin percussion and melodic bass lines, the music percolates beneath the voices of the MCs, with Ladybug bringing a female perspective that was more commonplace in hip-hop’s golden era 25 years ago. It’s “the jazz, the jive, the poetry,” as one of the group’s self-defining lines says. [Greg Kot for Chicago Tribune]

The 2016 Pitchfork Music Festival continued on Saturday after a successful (but slightly rainy) Friday. Day 2 had Beach Boy Brian Wilson playing Pet Sounds in full, the return of hip hop greats Digable Planets, the back-in-action Super Furry Animals, plus Sufjan Stevens, Blood Orange, Anderson .Paak, Savages and more. It would have included Holly Herndon, but her set never happened due to tech issues. They were typing out what was happening on screen, and a few shots of that, plus pictures of the rest of Saturday, are in the gallery above.

The fest wraps up today (7/17) with Miguel, Kamasi Washington, The Hotelier and many more. Check out pictures and review of Friday. Stay tuned for more coverage.
