Back in 2014, Seattle rapper Porter Ray caught the attention of Shabazz Palaces (and Digable Planets) member Ishmael Butler, who then signed him to Sub Pop. This year, Porter finally released his debut album for the label, Watercolor, and it features several collaborations with Shabazz Palaces members as well as members of Shabazz’s pals/collaborators/Sub Pop labelmates THEESatisfaction. The album’s production is rooted in atmospheric jazz and experimental electronics that Shabazz and THEESatisfaction fans should dig, but Porter raps more like an earthling than his labelmates. The album’s worth checking out and you can stream it, and watch the video for “Past Life,” below.

Porter is opening all August and September tour dates for Shabazz Palaces, who released not one but two new albums last week (stream/review). The tour includes a Brooklyn show on September 6 at Warsaw (tickets). All dates are listed below.
