Priests played Brooklyn Bazaar w/ Future Punks and Groupie (pics)

Priests‘ last NYC show was the record release at Brooklyn Bazaar for their terrific Nothing Feels Natural. Here we are, seven months later in the same venue, but Priests are even better this time, with a real electric connection between them and the crowd. They really are a force these days.

The band’s arrangements and musicianship have a lot to do with it:  Daniele Daniele’s drumming is taut and syncopate, working in tandem with Taylor Mulitz’s propulsive and melodic basslines, while GL Jaguar’s unique guitar style mixes surfy licks with hazy atmosphere. Those arrangements leave a lot of room for charasmatic singer Katie Alice Greer, which she has zero trouble filling. You can also tell they really like performing these songs for people. The full house was dancing and singling along, especially on shouty, quotable songs like “Doctor,” “Puff” and “No Big Bang” which is probably the highlight of their set these days, really showing off all the things Priests do so well. The set flew by, seemingly over as soon as it started. Usually a proponent of short, “leave ’em wanting more” sets, I definitely would’ve been okay with a couple more songs.

The show, which featured local openers Future Punx and Groupie, was also a benefit, with $1 from every ticket going to the Casa Ruby LGBT nonprofit organization.Pictures from the night are in the gallery above. Priests’ summer tour heads to the West Coast this week, playing Portland-area fest Pickathon and they will be back in the NYC area to play Basilica Soundscape in September. Updated tour dates are listed, along with full video of the band’s recent performance at Pitchfork fest, below.
