Public Practice announce debut album, share "Compromised," touring

Brooklyn band Public Practice have announced their debut album, Gentle Grip, which will be out May 14 via Wharf Cat. “We were thinking about classic New York dance albums, and the thing that stuck out is that many sounded like they were recorded in less-than-ideal situations,” says guitarist Vincent McClelland on the album’s inspiration, citing ESG and Liquid Liquid. “There was always something about them that felt somewhat home-cooked.” There’s also a little Athens, GA in Public Practice’s sound, that sharp and poppy place where post-punk lightened up just a little and groups like Pylon and The B-52s came ready to party.

You can hear that in the album’s snappy, energetic first single, “Compromised,” where singer Samantha York takes a look at the moral gymnastics of our daily life. “We all want to be our best green recycling selves, yet still want to buy the shiny new shoes — How do you emotionally navigate through that? How do you balance material wants with the need to be seen as morally good?” Check out the video, directed by Josie Keefe & Jonny Campolo of Pill/P.E., below.

Public Practice have a couple NYC shows on the horizon, including a New Colossus Festival show at Bowery Ballroom on March 13 with UK band LIFE and headliners A Place to Bury Strangers; and they’ll open for Shopping and Automatic at Elsewhere Hall on March 28. From there, they head to the UK and Europe. All dates are listed below.
