PUP share "Free At Last" & video ft. Finn Wolfhard, Charly Bliss, more

PUP‘s “Kids” is already one of the most addictive punk songs of the year so far, so it’s exciting news that PUP have unleashed the second single from their upcoming Morbid Stuff, “Free At Last.” Before this song came out, PUP posted the lyrics and the chords online and asked people to try to cover it without hearing it first, and 253 people sent in submissions. PUP incorporated clips of those covers into the “Free At Last” video, including ones by Stranger Things actor (and past PUP video star) Finn Wolfhard and Charly Bliss singer Eva Hendricks (the latter of whom also sings on the actual song). The video starts out with a montage of the covers, and then PUP’s actual song kicks in with a mock instructional video of how to play it and sing it. PUP singer Stefan Babcock says:

The video for “Free At Last” started off as a very, very stupid concept. Before the song was released, we put out the lyrics and a basic chord chart and asked people to record their own versions without hearing the original first. It was a bit of a social experiment. We expected to receive 15 or 20 covers. We received 253. A lot of them were very… interesting… but most of them were actually really good. We listened to every single one front to back (13 hours and 34 minutes), and by the end our brains were puddles of sludge and we couldn’t remember how our own version sounded.

We received hip hop versions, ska versions, grindcore, EDM, Mariachi, Ukulele, Polka, and piano ballad versions. Incredibly enough, none of the 253 covers sounded like ours. And even more astounding, no two of the covers sounded the same either. The amount of creativity and love put into these things absolutely blew us away.

As PUP videos often are, it’s totally over the top and very entertaining, and the song rips. Like “Kids,” it’s got one of the catchiest choruses of PUP’s career, and it’s even more reason to get excited about this new album. Check out the song and video below, and if you’d like to hear all 253 covers, you can do that here.

Morbid Stuff comes out April 11 via the band’s own Little Dipper label, in partnership with Rise/BMG (pre-order).

PUP are also touring, including shows with Ratboys, Charly Bliss, Twin Peaks, Diet Cig, Milk Teeth, Gender Roles, Casper Skulls, and Beach Bunny. The run with Ratboys and Diet Cig includes a sold-out NYC show on April 26 at Brooklyn Steel. Updated dates are listed below.
