Queen performing at the 2019 Oscars ++ Kacey Musgraves is presenting an award

The Oscars are this Sunday and are shaping up to be an even bigger mess than The Grammys. They announced and then soon decided against a new category called Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film; Kevin Hart dropped out of hosting duties after some old homophobic tweets were brought up and now this year’s ceremony has no host; producers announced they weren’t going to have most Best Original Song nominees performed live and then changed their minds after public outcry; and the same happened on nixing such awards as Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Makeup from the main ceremony.

Now, instead of finding some other way to shorten the infamously overlong ceremony, it appears as if they’re lengthening it, having just announced that Queen will be performing. The band are not nominated for anything, but Bohemian Rhapsody, the film about them and frontman Freddie Mercury, is up for five Oscars including Best Picture. What the group — which these days includes original members Brian May and Roger Taylor along with American Idol runner up Adam Lambert on vocals — will perform, exactly, remains to be seen, but probably something involving thunderbolts and lightning.

Also performing this year are Jennifer Hudson (“I’ll Fight” from the documentary RBG), Gillian Welch & David Rawlings (performing “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga (performing A Star is Born hit “Shallow”), and Bette Midler (“The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns).

Meanwhile, they’ve also announced that Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves will be presenting an award this year. You can tune in and see what happens when the 91st Academy Awards air Sunday night at 8 PM Eastern.
