Godfather of home recording R. Stevie Moore is a legend of sorts among certain lo-fi fans (like Ariel Pink) with a ton of records (some of them really great) dating back to the late ’60s. He plays around NYC a lot, and he’s got two shows this weekend, both with another cult legend, Gary Wilson. In case you’re unfamiliar, his bio on Stones Throw’s website reads:

Gary Wilson emerged from New York’s DIY movement with 1977’s proto-New Wave masterpiece You Think You Really Know Me, an extraordinary record which has been known to suck unprepared new listeners in like a drug and never let go. Shortly after its limited release its creator simply vanished.

In the 25-year wake before he was found again, Gary’s small-town opus had spread by word-of-mouth and indie radio to inspire a whole new generation of musicians and producers with his bizarre songs and personal musical vision. His cult following includes Beck, who shouts him out in “Where It’s At (Two Turntables And A Microphone)”, The Roots’ ?uestlove, Simpsons creator Matt Groening, and of course, Stones Throw’s Peanut Butter Wolf.

The shows happen TONIGHT (1/24) at Issue Project Room and Saturday (1/25) at Glasslands with DJ Dubious Luxury. Tickets for the IPR show and the Glasslands show are on sale now.

Gary’s backing band The Blind Dates are in town from Austin to play these shows with him, and while they’re here, they’ll also play their own show as Jetu at Baby’s All Right on Sunday (1/26) with Jupiter Boys and Dead Nights.
