Radio Birdman Descent Maelstrom film

Radio Birdman doc screening at Nitehawk with Q&A with Deniz Tek

Next up at the BrooklynVegan-presented Music Driven series at Williamsburg’s Nitehawk Cinema is a screening of Descent Into The Maelstrom, the 2017 documentary on legendary Australian punk band Radio Birdman, alongside a Q&A with Radio Birdman founder/guitarist Deniz Tek and director Jonathan Sequeira. Here’s more on the film:

Descent into the Maelstrom is the true story of Radio Birdman, from their original formation to the present. Like the band itself, it’s an independent production, made from outside the industry. It shows what the band meant to the fans, and how they changed Australia, by inspiring a golden age of indie music from Cold Chisel to Midnight Oil.

Descent into the Maelstrom features interviews with all surviving members of the band and doesn’t shy away from the internal conflict which sometimes fuelled the band’s performances. It’s already been called the greatest Australian music documentary ever made and is crammed full of Radio Birdman music and rare archival footage and photos, some not seen for over 40 years!

CAST INCLUDES: Deniz Tek, Warwick Gilbert, Rob Younger, Chris Masuak, Pip Hoyle, Ron Keeley, Jules Normington, Alley Brereton, Johnny Kannis, Julienne Mostyn Gilbert, Mark Sisto, Anthony O’Grady

The screening/Q&A happens on November 15 at 7 PM. Tickets are on sale. Watch the trailer below.

Radio Birdman released two albums (1977’s Radios Appear and 1981’s Living Eyes) and one EP (1976’s Burn My Eye) during their initial run as a band, and much of that material was collected for the The Essential Radio Birdman compilation, which came out on Sub Pop in 2001 and helped introduced Radio Birdman to a new audience. A few years later, they made a new album, 2006’s Zeno Beach.
