Radiohead began Madison Square Garden run (pics, video, setlist)

After kicking off their North American summer tour with two nights in Chicago, Radiohead headed to NYC for a four-night run at Madison Square Garden, starting Tuesday (7/10). While the majority of their setlist came from their most recent album, 2016’s A Moon Shaped Pool, and their 2000 release Kid A, the band also mixed it up with plenty of songs from In Rainbows and OK Computer, a couple each from Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief, and The King of Limbs, and a single song off The Bends – a glorious set-closing rendition of its title track.

Although the set didn’t feature any extra noteworthy deep cuts, Radiohead have been mixing it up on multiple nights in cities, so there’s a good chance they’ll play some songs on nights two through four that were left off the setlist on Tuesday. Besides, with such a rock solid live show and the musical chemistry between these longtime band members, Radiohead don’t need to rely on the promise of rarities or gimmicks to hold the audience in the palm of their hand for the nearly two and a half hours of their set. Whether reflecting our current political anxieties with some of the biggest cheers of the night for the lines in “No Surprises” (“bring down the government, they don’t, they don’t speak for us”), or simply moving the crowd to dance with an extra heavy rendition of “Lotus Flower,” Radiohead were in total command of the sold-out MSG crowd.

Jonny Greenwood’s project Junun opened Tuesday night’s show, and the whole tour, but we missed their set. (They also performed on Colbert and at Alamo Drafthouse on Monday night, where Jonny did a Q&A with Paul Thomas Anderson and Nigel Godrich). Check out pictures from Tuesday night’s show in the gallery above, and find video clips and the setlist below.
