Rainer Maria playing Elsewhere + emo book release party is in NYC this month

Indie/emo vets Rainer Maria returned this year with S/T on Polyvinyl, their first album in 11 years and one that both picks up where they left off and also has some new tricks. It’s their heaviest album yet, and it should appeal to longtime fans and newcomers alike. If you haven’t heard it yet, you can remedy that by streaming it below.

Rainer Maria supported the album on a fall tour that included The Fest and a hometown show at Bowery Ballroom with support from Olivia Neutron-John and their old pal Tim Kinsella, who had played NYC a few days earlier as the singer of Cap’n Jazz. Rainer Maria have added another NYC show for 2018, happening February 22 at Elsewhere (Hall) (599 Johnson Ave in Bushwick). It’s a one-off (for now at least), and tickets are on sale.

In related news, both Rainer Maria and Tim Kinsella’s brother/bandmate Mike Kinsella were interviewed by Tom Mullen for his new book Anthology of Emo: Volume One, which is out now via Polyvinyl (and has a foreword written by yours truly). You can order yours here. If you’re in NYC, you can attend the book’s release party on December 7 at A Bar in Greenpoint, which will have a few DJs playing emo and post-hardcore faves (myself included).

Here’s one of Rainer Maria singer Caithlin de Marrais’ quotes from the book:
