R&B singer UMI touring w/ Dianna Lopez, playing Lovers & Friends and Essence Fest
Seattle-born, LA-based artist UMI makes very promising ethereal R&B, and if it reminds you a little of SZA, you may not be surprised to learn that’s one of her biggest influences:
Sonically, I’m inspired by a lot of neo-soul and female artists like SZA and Eryakh Badu. Women who talk about how they feel. [SZA’s album] Ctrl was the first time I felt like someone who looked like me was talking about things like insecurity. It was cool to realize I can write about that and people actually listen to it.
That’s what I want to do with my music, too. I want to give back to my fellow listeners. I hope people can find healing—I learned that from people [who came] before me.
UMI released the very good Love Language EP last year, and just followed it with another very good single, “Picture Perfect.” She’s also about to begin the mostly-sold-out ‘Love Language Tour’ with support from another rising, indie-R&B singer, Dianna Lopez. The tour includes a Brooklyn show on March 24 at Baby’s All Right (which is sold out but you can join the waitlist). UMI also plays Essence Festival and Goldenvoice’s just-announced hip hop nostalgia fest Lovers & Friends. All dates are listed below.
As for Dianna Lopez, the Rockland County, NY singer recently released the new single “Date With The Moon” and you can check that out below too.
