Relapse release 2017 sampler, sign Trappist (mem Spazz, Despise You, etc)
Relapse Records have released their annual sampler, and along with it, they revealed the news that they signed LA sludge-punk trio TRAPPIST. Though the band is new, the members have been around: Chris Dodge (of Infest, Spazz, Despise You, No Use For A Name, and more bands; writer for Maximum RockNRoll in the ’80s; employee at Alternative Tentacles and Fat Wreck Chords in the ’90s), Phil Vera (of Crom, Despise You, and -(16)-), and Ryan Harkins (of Killed In Action). The band’s first single is “No Corporate Beer,” which is also the last track on the sampler. Their debut album is expected in Spring 2018.
The new sampler also highlights Relapse’s highly diverse roster, with 2017 songs by death metal vets Obituary and Exhumed (the latter of whom release their new album Death Revenge next week), Exhumed/Repulsion offshoot Expulsion, crossover thrash revivalists Iron Reagan, metalcore vets Integrity, dream-folk-metal artist Myrkur, doom legends The Obsessed, melodic doom newcomer King Woman, sludgy shoegazers Cloakroom (who play NYC TONIGHT, 10/5), Amebix/Voivod offshoot Tau Cross, psych rockers Ecstatic Vision, synthwavers and Stranger Things soundtrackers S U R V I V E, avant-garde rockers Ex Eye, black metallers Black Anvil, one-man industrial band Author & Punisher (who signed to Relapse this year), and still much more. The sampler is free to download as always, but if you do want to donate, this year 100% of the proceeds are going to Rock to the Future, “a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2010 that provides music education for Philadelphia’s underserved youth at no cost to them or their families.”
