Richard Hell, Ira Kaplan, Lenny Kaye & more performed at the first Ivan Julian benefit at City Winery (pics/video/setlist)

The first of two benefit shows for former Richard Hell & the Voidoids guitarist Ivan Julian, who is battling cancer, went down at City Winery in NYC on Wednesday (5/4) with a lineup filled with icons, including Debbie Harry, Lenny Kaye, Willie Nile, Bush Tetras, Ian Hunter (of Mott the Hoople), Richard Barone, and more, with a house band that featured members of the Patti Smith Group and others. The night included Vernon Reid and Burnt Sugar performing a mix of songs by Prince and Bowie.

The real treat was a rare appearance by Richard Hell who performed Voidiods classics “The Kid with the Replaceable Head”, “Time” and “Blank Generation,” before bringing some of the night’s performers onstage for a singalong finale of “Purple Rain.” More pics and videos from the night are below.

According to Ivan’s GoFundMe page, the sold-out event raised $15,000. The second benefit show is happening on Saturday (5/7) with return appearances from Richard Hell and Ira Kaplan, plus Thurston Moore & Lee Ranaldo, Matthew Sweet, Arto Lindsay, Lydia Lunch, Jim Sclavunos (of Bad Seeds/Grinderman) and more. Tickets are still available. Check out more pictures and videos from the first night below.
