Gene Wilder, RIP
Comedic actor Gene Wilder, star of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, The Producers, Stir Crazy, and more, has died at age 83. Variety reports Wilder died at his home in Pomona, California from complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Few could mine laughs out of nervousness and mania the way Wilder could, with an ability to pivot between moods on a dime. There were few funnier in his prime. To quote from Arthur O’Shaughnessy by way of Willy Wonka, “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.” You certainly were Gene. Rest in peace.
Mel Brooks is hosting a screening of Blazing Saddles at Radio City Music Hall this Thursday (9/1) which may be the teariest showing of the film ever.
