RIP Tobe Hooper, director of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' 'Poltergeist' & more

Sad news: Tobe Hooper, the director of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and more has died at age 74. Shot for less than $300,000, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the most influential horror films ever made, and spawned many sequels, a few of which Hooper directed himself. That eventually brought him mainstream success: he directed the popular TV miniseries version of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot in 1979, and Steven Spielberg tapped Hooper to direct 1982’s massive horror hit Poltergeist. (His still-out-there 1985 film Lifeforce is a cult classic.) He also directed the music video for Billy Idol’s “Dancing with Myself.”

Rest in peace, Tobe.
