Saint Etienne played Bowery Ballroom (setlist, review), play Brooklyn tonight

UK greats Saint Etienne just started their North American tour, playing Boston on Sunday and then on Monday (9/25) played Bowery Ballroom, their first of two NYC shows. Playing to a packed house of devoted fans who applauded just as loud for songs off their new Home Counties as their ’90s dance classics “Who Do You Think You Are,” “Nothing Can Stop Us” and “He’s on the Phone,” Bob, Pete and Sarah were in great form at Bowery. In fact, for this tour, Saint Etienne are an eight-piece which included unofficial fourth member of the band Debsey Wykes (of Dolly Mixture and Birdie), plus a few multi-instrumentalists who toggled between guitar, bass, violin, flute, keyboards and pedal steel. With a lithe drummer in tow as well, they really brought the songs to life, and also allowed for a few songs from 1998’s In Good Humor (the “full band” album they made with Cardigans producer Tor Johansson), including “Sylvie” and “Lose that Girl.” With tongue-in-cheek projections that mirrored Home Counties‘ album art (“Skilled Musicians with Over 25 Years of Experience”) it all made for a really special show. Check out setlist and a few Instagram pics and videos below.

Saint Etienne play Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (9/26) with Annie Hart of Au Revoir Simone opening. Tickets are still available and, if you went to the Bowery show, the band say they’ll be mixing up the setlist tonight with a few different songs.
