This past Friday (6/17), My Morning Jacket, and Daniel Martin Moore played Chicago's Auditorium Theatre.

"...attired like Southern gentlemen in a sharp-shooting soul band, My Morning Jacket played with a woolly ferocity that nearly matched [front man; Jim] James' energy.

My Morning Jacket's 13-year career is less a linear progression than a tale of two bands; the earliest incarnation a group very much in the tradition of Southern rockers such as The Allman Brothers and beholden to the regional imperative to jam all night long on as many guitars as possible, the second configuration a quirkier outfit experimenting with pop, funk and reggae." [Greg Kot; Chicago Tribune]

Currently in the midst of a large-scale tour in support of their new LP Circuital, the band will be back in Chicago on August 6th to play Lollapalooza.

Bonnaroo

Two New York men who got arrested here Friday never made it to Bonnaroo. That's because law officers allegedly found they were carrying over a pound of cocaine, 1,000 ecstasy pills, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Alberto R. Almonte, 40, and Joseph Cruz, 29, both of the Bronx, N.Y., are charged with possession of drugs for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia. Almonte is also charged with speeding.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, it was around 2 p.m. Friday when Trooper Matilda Mahaney clocked a 2006 Chevrolet Impala doing 83 in a 55 mile-per-hour zone on Highway 111 in Putnam County.

The trooper stopped the car "and discovered that the two occupants were enroute to Bonnaroo in Manchester," says a news release from the THP. [Herald Citizen]

My Morning Jacket @ Terminal 5 in 2010 (more by David Andrako)
14

My Morning Jacket's new LP Circuital, hits stores today via ATO Records. The album was recorded in an old church-gymnasium in the group's hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, and features the direction of super-producer/musician/composer Tucker Martine.

"The new record, Circuital, is named after the title song," explains Jim James, of My Morning Jacket's sixth studio album. "On that song I sing about ending up in the same place where you started out. And that makes a lot of sense for this album... I hate the phrase 'going back to our roots', but for this record we came home and made it in Kentucky. And it just felt a lot like it did when we were first starting out..."

Jim James on the Circuital recording sessions..

"There was no AC, no-one had their laptops. We recorded everything on tape. It was like, we're just who we are, with what we have with us at the moment, and that's all we have. It was a beautiful thing, and it really cemented what we all mean to each other, as people and as a band. We've learned, slowly over the years, how to function more healthily, I guess, so we don't all combust. Making this record, it felt like our friendship was only strengthened." [ATO Records]

My Morning Jacket will play the first show of their 2011 summer tour tonight; at home, at the Louisville Palace Theatre. American Express will be live streaming their performance as part of their 'Unstaged' series. Tune in here at 8PM CST to watch their set.

They'll hit Chicago on June 17th to play the Auditorium Theatre. Tickets are still available.

You can view the Circuital track listing, all 2011 tour dates, and more below...

Booker T. Jones

Booker T. Jones released The Road From Memphis earlier this month (5/10 via Anti-) with a notable list of guest artists. The Roots act as Jones' backing band on the album, and Matt Berninger of The National, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Lou Reed, and Sharon Jones all provide guest vocals. The album is produced by Jones, Questlove, and Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliot Smith), and was recorded by Gabriel Roth of Daptone Records.

Booker T plays The Bell House in Brooklyn tonight (5/24). The Bo-Keys, who were originally listed as an opener, no longer seem to be on the show though. The show is instead being opened by DJ Toddophonic Todd. Tickets are still on sale.

The Brooklyn show is one of his few this summer. All tour dates, a video, a Tiny Desk concert, the album tracklist and more, below....

Lemmy & Dave Grohl

As previously discussed, this weekend is the Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama (May 20-22, 2011). As we wrote, "Hang Out Music Fest is heavy on the jam bands, but will also feature appearances from Paul Simon, The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, Foo Fighters, Motorhead, Cee Lo, Girl Talk, Minus The Bear, El Mariachi Bronx and many more over its three days." If you can't be there, iClips will be streaming performances online all weekend.

Speaking of Paul Simon, his tour just got bigger with the addition of another NYC show.

Speaking of My Morning Jacket and streaming, they'll be streaming a live show on May 31st directed by Todd Haynes.

Speaking of Foo Fighters, Motorhead and El Mariachi Bronx, BBG writes, "there's something wrong with the world when Motorhead is hitting the road supporting Foo Fighters, but nevertheless they're doing that right now with Biffy Clyro. Those dates include a showing at the Hangout Festival and conclude when Foo Fighters hit Sasquatch on May 27th."

Foo Fighters are also planning a trip to the Northeast, and have announed more dates that include one in the NYC-area at Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ on 9/26. Tickets go on sale 5/20 at 10AM and support at the NJ date, as with all dates on that leg, will come from Rise Against (who just played T5 twice two weeks ago with Bad Religion) and Mariachi el Bronx (who recently played Highline Ballroom, are also playing Hangout, and are playing a boat as the Bronx).

All FF tour dates and some video is below.

Kathryn Calder on stage with The New Pornographers (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Kathryn Calder of New Pornographers

Kathryn Calder, possibly best known for her contributions to a certain supergroup that contains her uncle, is currently on the road with Himalayan Bear on the West Coast. The dates are in support of Are You My Mother?, her own album which dropped in August of last year. All current dates are listed below, Pitchfork Fest included.

The New Pornographers have upcoming dates at both the previously discussed B.O.M.B. Fest in CT on May 29, and Festival for Humanity in Vernon, NJ on May 30th. The latter is on board for Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama (May 20-22, 2011). Hang Out Music Fest is heavy on the jam bands, but will also feature appearances from Paul Simon, The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, Foo Fighters, Motorhead, Cee Lo, Girl Talk, Minus The Bear, and many more over its three days.

Lollapalooza last year (more by Josh Darr)
Lollaplaooza

Lollapalooza celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with some huge names on its just-announced lineup. See it in full below.

The festival has obviously changed over the years. What started out as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction with a 'touring festival' lineup that included the Rollins Band, Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, and Souxsie & The Banshees, has turned into a one-weekend Chicago festival that Lady Gaga co-headlined last year. As leaked a while ago, Foo Fighters, Muse and Eminem all play this year, as will Coldplay, Cee Lo Green, and My Morning Jacket along with the reunited Cars and the continuing-to-be-reunited Big Audio Dynamite and Death From Above 1979, and a bunch of other bands which may or may not be worth the ticket price depending on how you feel about the headliners and generally seeing bands in big, hot, outdoor crowded parks (Lollapalooza happens in Chicago's Grant Park from August 5th - 7th).

Full 2011 Lineup and a couple of videos (one from 1991, one from 2010), below...

Lollapalooza 2010 (via @Chubys)

Three-day passes can be purchase for $215, and single-day passes should be on sale shortly.

Record Store Day

Record Store Day 2011 is Saturday (4/16)! Shops will be flooded with limited/rare releases from tons of notables (watch a video below of some of the stuff), and they will hopefully make lots of money. Some area stores will also host free live events...

Other Music, though they seem to have scaled it back a bit from last year, has a special show scheduled for Saturday, but set your alarm clocks.

We also have a very special in-store performance on Saturday from NYC's own Regina Spektor ...The first 100 customers who buy her new RSD 7" Four from Far at Other Music on Record Store Day will get one ticket to see a private solo performance Regina is giving right next door to OM at 2 p.m. on Saturday. That's the only way to see the show, so come on down early, get in line and buy her new RSD 7" record.
Regina will also be screening her concert film Live In London later that night at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Anyone who can't get in to the live show, will get $3 off admission with an Other Music Record Store Day receipt (show it at the box office).

Though it isn't exactly a record store or a free show, Fontana's will host a "RSD Afterparty" from 3PM to 7PM with Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, The Kickdrums, Midnight Spin, and The Pass. The show costs $10.

Cake Shop used to be a record store and it will be again on Record Store Day. As Bill said, "Eternal Summers also play Cake Shop on Saturday (4/16) which is the venue's Record Store Day extravaganza, featuring a slew of great -- mostly local -- bands. The downstairs will be a record mart during the day (noon - 6PM). Bands during the evening include the previously-mentioned McDonalds, Natural Child, Widowspeak, Overlord, Hands & Knees, Night Collectors and Twitchers." The flyer is reposted below.

Looney Tunes in West Babylon is sure to actually be looney, as the store will host free shows by Thursday, Kevin Devine, The Pretty Reckless, Alex Skolnick, Grace Read, Tiger Riot, and Hotel of The Laughing Tree starting at 2PM. There will be a Record Store Day tent at Coachella for those braving the sun at the sold out fest this weekend. Check the Record Store Day site for many more listings (though note their list is far from complete).

What did we miss?

BrooklynVegan is also a proud Record Store Day partner this year. Look for our metal-centric ad in a free Decibel mini-mag that will be available at various record stores on Saturday. The cover looks like this:

Decibel

If you can't get the mag, you can also download the free sampler that comes with it online And though heavy music isn't strongly represented this year live, we are happy to remedy that in recorded format by giving away a massive prize pack of vinyl to one (seriously) lucky reader. It includes:

  • Trap Them's Darker Handcraft on vinyl
  • a Kvelertak t-shirt
  • Red Fang - limited edition Wires 7" vinyl
  • A prize pack of Goes Cube 7" vinyl featuring every song on Of Tides & Drifts "Property" (sorry, the label informed us that they instead only have "Property" for this contest)

Who made it to My Morning Jacket's last NYC show, aka VH1 Storytellers (that Lykke Li is filming an episode of today)?
