Shaky Knees 2016 in pics (ATDI, Jane's Addiction, Slowdive, Florence, Hop Along, Baroness & more)
Earlier this month (5/13-15), Atlanta’s fourth annual Shaky Knees music festival went down at Centennial Olympic Park. Headliners included Jane’s Addiction performing 1990’s Ritual de lo habitual in full, the 1975, My Morning Jacket, Florence + the Machine and the reunited At the Drive In.
The festival also included several other great acts, such as the reunited Slowdive, Julien Baker, Hop Along, Beach Slang, Against Me!, Foxing, The Front Bottoms, Deftones, Baroness and more.
Reviews were mixed for Jane’s Addiction‘s set. Some said it was like no time had passed since 1990, and others said Perry Farrell’s voice was in bad shape.
It sounded like At the Drive-In, even without Jim Ward, were not to be missed. Yvonne Zusel for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes:
Excitement was so high for At the Drive-In’s headlining performance…that even vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala seemed impressed: “It’s surreal that I can leave my house, get on a plane and people still give a f***, years and years later,” he marveled toward the end of an unrelenting set that saw the band playing many songs from their best-known album, 2000’s Relationship of Command, including “Invalid Litter Dept.” Bixler-Zavala hasn’t lost a bit of his frontman swagger, climbing on the group’s drum kit and amps during the hard-charging “Cosmonaut” and flinging the microphone around like a baton, backlit by a collection of colored lights.
Fellow reunited band Slowdive also got good feedback, as Philip Cosores for Consequence of Sound says:
As [vocalist Rachel Goswell] performed, visibly emotional, the band’s foggy shoegaze glistened with catharsis, with the weight of what the moment meant to the band being imparted on the audience. It’s not surprising that Slowdive’s set covered a broad emotional spectrum, even with a modest-sized audience. What was surprising was how easily it comes to the band, with “Souvlaki Space Station” appropriately lifting the set into the stratosphere.
