Shilpa Ray is following up last year’s Door Girl with a new EP titled Nihilism that will be released on cassette and digitally on May 14 via Northern Spy. It features new song “Shoot This Dying Horse” and a cover of Alice Cooper’s “Is it My Body.” Shilpa talked a little about “Shoot This Dying Horse”:

Musically this was a lot of fun to write and arrange. I had binge watched Long Strange Trip, the Grateful Dead documentary series, and immediately began to mess around with the chord changes for “Shoot This Dying Horse.” I’ve never considered myself to be a dead head but there is something in their music that makes me want to write. They’ve had that effect on me for as long as I started writing songs. No horses were harmed during the writing and recording of this track.

As for “Is This My Body,” Shilpa says she and her band listened to this one a lot on tour. “When I paid closer attention to the lyrics, I realized if sung by a woman this song could be a feminist anthem. Who knew Alice Cooper wrote feminist anthems?” You can listen to the lovely “Shoot This Dying Horse,” which premieres in this post, below.

You’ll also be able to catch Shilpa on the Nihilism Tour which kicks off with a record release show at New Haven, CT’s Cafe Nine on May 16 and wraps up at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere Zone One on June 14 (tickets). All tour dates are listed below.
