Punk blues singer Shilpa Ray has been planning to release her new album Last Year’s Savage on Northern Spy this year, but ahead of that she recently dropped a 2-song covers EP on the label. It features a crunchy take on Lou Reed’s “Make Up” (from Transformer), and a somber modernized rendition of Mexican songwriter Maria Grever’s 1934 song “Cuando vuelva a tu lado” (popularized by Dinah Washington’s 1959 version as “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes” with English lyrics by Stanley Adams). Listen to both below.

Shilpa begins a tour this week that starts in her hometown of Brooklyn on Friday (2/27) at Union Pool with Johanna Samuels, Lips and Female. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
