The eternal march of musical stars onto the silver screen continues unabated, and with SDCC going down as we speak, there was bound to be news on that front.

Firstly, one of our more recently-minted pop stars, Sia, is will be found voicing the character “Songbird Serenade” in the upcoming My Little Pony movie that drops in 2017, it was announced at the Hasbro panel at SDCC. Before you laugh, consider that the film is from the team behind the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic TV series that was actually quite well-received, and is co-written by Rita Hsiao, writer of such gems as Toy Story 2 and Mulan. That movie also features Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black, along with Emily Blunt, Taye Diggs, Kristin Chenoweth, Michael Pena and Liev Schreiber.

Elsewhere, one of the buzziest titles at SDCC is the upcoming sci-fi action flick
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
from the great Luc Besson. People were excited about the footage, and Luc Besson is generally a good bet (did you see Lucy? go see Lucy). That one will be out next summer, and features the one and only Rihanna. Hopefully this will be a more auspicious screen outing for her than the ill-fated Battleship. But she’s not the only musician working on this one, as it also involves the acting talents of one Herbie Hancock (who has that Celebrate Brooklyn show coming up soon). You heard that right. The rest of the star-studded cast involves Cara Delavigne, Dane DeHaan, John Goodman, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Rutger Hauer, and now I’m all excited.

And while he’s more a seasoned screen-performed than Rihanna or Sia, Justin Timberlake was also at Comic Con hyping his new animated movie Trolls. It’s about Trolls. Justin had time to talk about his plans for a new album at the event, not really giving us much but claiming that his single “Can’t Stop This Feeling” (which is on the Trolls soundtrack, along with some as-yet-unheard Justin jams) has rekindled his interest in working on something new. Anyway, the DreamWorks animated movie stars fellow popsmith Gwen Stefani, as well as Anna Kendrick, Russell Brand and others.
