Sigur Ros have announced a run of three special shows in Los Angeles. They’ll be playing with the backing of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra which, a bit surprisingly, marks their first time with live orchestral accompaniment since way back in 2003. The shows go down on April 13, 14 & 15 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and are part of the Philharmonic’s larger Icelandic-themed Reykjavík Festival.

The press for the shows, which are still far in the future (ticket info has yet to be released), suggests that they will include a combination of classic Sigur Ros material along with new, as-yet-unheard stuff. Each show will be accompanied by a different orchestral introduction. All in all, should be an exciting event.

Also part of the Reykjavík Festival. will be a performance by Jóhann Jóhannsson on April 17 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with an opening set from Icelandic label Bedroom Community’s roster which includes Valgeir Sigurðsson, Nico Muhly, Sam Amidon, and others.

Sigur Ros are of course heading out on a North American tour pretty soon, which includes another LA show at the Hollywood Bowl on September 24, as well as three NYC shows which are all sold out.

For an idea of what Sigur Ros sound like with an orchestral backing, check out a video from their sessions at Abbey Road studios back in 2008. Along with that, updated dates are listed below,
