Sleater-Kinney talk playing live; win tix to one of their NYC shows

Sleater-Kinney at Riviera Theatre
Sleater-Kinney in Chicago this year (more by James Richards IV)

Sleater-Kinney are on tour supporting their new album The Center Won’t Hold, and Carrie Brownstein took to twitter to talk a bit about the band’s live show:

Live is where it all comes together. You bring up something we think about often. Nowadays, someone can instantly hear an entire catalog and assume that every old album was adored by fans. But fans who were around when each album came out didn’t necessarily like them at first. When The Woods came out, interviewers asked me (CB) accusingly why I wanted to do guitar solos? Some listeners were also annoyed because solos weren’t punk. They missed the angular terseness found on the previous albums. When we did the video for “Get Up,” it was the first time a huge group of fans had heard The Hot Rock. There was palpable disappointment after the straight forward anthemic songs of Dig Me Out. And don’t get me started on the critical ire for All Hands On The Bad One! When and how people find our music, or relate to it, has not always been contemporaneous with an album’s release. The live show, however, *is* about the present, the moment. Which is what we show up for. Night after night. And the fans have been showing as well. We thank u.

Sleater-Kinney’s tour hits Boston tonight (10/29), and from there heads to NYC for a pair of shows, the band’s first shows here since 2015: Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre on October 30, and a Halloween-night show at Hammerstein Ballroom on October 31. You can get tickets to both shows now, and we’re also giving away tickets to Hammerstein Ballroom! Enter for a chance to win below.
