Fast forward 23 years, to last night at Union Transfer. Slint takes the stage to show us what could have been, what should have been and what shall forever be. The set is a mash-up of Spiderland and Tweez, their 1989 Steve Albini-produced debut, where all the songs are titled with the first names of their parents. They perform in near- total darkness. They say nothing to the crowd, save a few goofy non sequiturs uttered between songs by McMahan in a faux-ancient negro rasp. They are precision incarnate, but they make their flawlessness look effortless. They are humble masters of tension and release. They raise anti-climax to an artform. They swing like a sledgehammer, with more groove than four white kids from Kentucky have a right to. [Phawker]

Legendary post-rock/post-hardcore band Slint broke up in the early ’90s before ever getting to tour their second album, the now-classic Spiderland. They’ve reunited before though, and are now reunited again, currently on the road playing their first US shows since 2007. The above review is of their Philly show which they played on May 1, before beginning their sold-out 3-night run in NYC.

The NYC run kicked off last night (5/4) at Bowery Ballroom, and like the rest of the tour, saw them playing all of Spiderland and a few songs off their debut, Tweez, plus Tweez-era outtake “Glenn” (which eventually came out on their 1994 untitled EP) and Spiderland outtake “Pam” which appears on the new Spiderland box set. Pictures of the Bowery Ballroom show, including shots of their tourmates Spires That in the Sunset Rise, are in this post.

Slint’s tour continues with more sold-out NYC shows tonight (5/5) at The Wick and Tuesday (5/6) at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
