Small Wonder released an album (stream it), playing shows

by Andrew Sacher

Small Wonder

Small Wonder is the project of Brooklyn’s Henry Crawford, who released his new album, Wendy, earlier this year and puts it on cassette on May 6 via Father/Daughter Records (the label that just put out the Faux Real comp on RSD). All the Mineral and American Football excitement today has emo on my mind, but I’ll spare you the E-word and just point out that Henry tags the album as “sad” on bandcamp and Gold Flake Paint says:

It makes me want to sob. It makes me want to hug everyone I’ve ever loved and apologise to all of those that I’ve let down. It makes me want to crawl in to the one I love now and hold her for longer than I ever have before. I feel connected to it. I feel like I grew up with it; like it knows all of my secrets and fears and hidden memories.

It’s definitely sappy — slow, soft acoustic guitars and confessional lyrics, etc — but if you’ve got a soft spot for this kind of stuff, Small Wonder will likely light a spark. It’s also similar to somber 2000s indie pop like The Robot Ate Me. Take a listen to the album in full, below.

Small Wonder has a few local shows coming up, including one on May 5 at Silent Barn with Emperor X, Steve Sobs and Tape Deck Mountain; and another on June 20 at The Paper Box with more artists TBA.
