Soccer Mommy releasing debut LP on Fat Possum, touring (stream 2 songs)

Following a few Bandcamp releases, Soccer Mommy, aka 20 year old Nashville musician Sophie Allison and her band, are releasing their debut album, Clean, out March 2 via Fat Possum. Clean was produced by Gabe Wax (War On Drugs, Deerhunter, Beirut) and mixed by Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, PJ Harvey), and you can listen to its first two singles, “Cool” and “Your Dog,” below. The prevailing mood on the new songs is a kind of fuzzy melancholy, with jangly guitars and Sophie’s sweet but laid back voice. “Cool”‘s main character Mary is “out with her friends just getting high, like a stoner girl,” and also “won’t ever love no boy, she’ll treat you like a fucking toy.” “Your Dog” is about an abusive relationship, about which Sophie says, “the song and the video are meant to show someone breaking away and taking action, but at the same time, it’s only a quick burst of motivation. It’s a moment of strength amidst a long period of weakness.”

Soccer Mommy have some upcoming tour dates opening for Phoebe Bridgers, including her two sold out Brooklyn shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and they’ve added headlining dates of their own, too. After the MHOW dates, they’ll be back in Brooklyn for a show at Rough Trade on May 4. Tickets for that show go sale Friday (2/2) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (1/31) at noon. They also play this year’s SXSW.

Madeline Kenney opens some of the new dates; all are listed below.
