Speedy Ortiz streaming new album, ‘Foil Deer’ (listen)

Speedy

This new record was written after almost a year of constant touring with Speedy. We would meet girls at our shows who would talk to us about being inspired to start bands because of our first record. . . . . I had this idea in my head that I had to write more meaningful songs for them, that I had to be a better role model (for myself, too). So instead of writing more about a tumultuous personal life, I turned my focus on bigger issues — ingrained sexism, harmful gender roles, marianismo, rape culture — and let my anger loose on those things. [Sadie Dupuis to Boston Globe]

Speedy Ortiz are a week away from releasing their second album, Foil Deer (due 4/21 via Carpark), and they’re now streaming the entire thing. As singer Sadie Dupuis’ interview with Boston Globe quoted above points out, this time they’re taking on bigger issues lyrically, and the music is a progression from their debut too. The discordant indie rock they became known for is still fully here, but keyboards are involved, there’s an increased amount of studio work, and the record clearly sounds bigger and more confident than its predecessor. (Not that Major Arcana sounded small or unconfident.) It’s a great album — listen at NPR.

Speedy’s tour with Mitski and Krill hits NYC on April 25 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for that show are still available.
