Spike Lee threw a Prince block party in Fort Greene ++ 'Hamilton,' 'The Color Purple' and Apollo Theatre paid tribute too (video)
Everyone is still reeling from the Prince‘s death, and yesterday his music could be heard everywhere, including a couple notable impromptu gatherings. In Harlem, The Apollo changed its marquee to “IN HONOR OF THE BEAUTIFUL ONE – PRINCE – NOTHING COMPARES 2 U” and played Prince’s music from their outdoor speakers all day and into the night, as fans gathered to honor, remember and dance.
Director Spike Lee threw a block party outside his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks headquarters (S. Elliott Place between DeKalb and Lafayette Avenues), inviting folks via instagram, which drew around a thousand fans. Fan-shot video is below, and you can watch a WPIX news report (where Starchild is among those interviewed) here.
Meanwhile, on Broadway, the cast of hit musical Hamilton paid tribute to Prince by performing “Let’s Go Crazy”; and the cast of The Color Purple performed a rendition of “Purple Rain.” Video of both of those is below.
