Spoonboy

Spoonboy is the solo project of David Combs (of DC DIY punk band The Max Levine Ensemble) that he’s kept active since 2003 with a rotating cast of members from Nana Grizol, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Music Tapes, Defiance Ohio, Good Luck and more. This Thursday (5/29), he’s releasing three split records, one with UK indie pop band Martha, a second with another UK indie pop band Colour Me Wednesday and a third with The Goodbye Party, aka Michael Cantor of Philly punks The Ambulars. That’s a lot of releases to put out in one day, and you can get a taste of it from “The Dispossessed” off the split with CMW, which premieres in this post.

“The Dispossessed” hits elements of early power pop, alt-folk, and punk with wicked sharp pop melodies in the verses, and big, passionately sung choruses. It’s an addictive pop song if I’ve ever heard one. Check it out for yourself below.

Spoonboy also kicks off a tour the day of the releases which includes dates with both Colour Me Wednesday and The Goodbye Party. The tour begins at NYC’s Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space on 5/29 (155 Ave C) with the UK’s Onsind, Colour Me Wednesday (US debut, playing acoustic), Shark Shark (mems. Defiance Ohio, Nana Grizol), and A-E-I-O-U. Two days later, he hits Brooklyn’s Death by Audio (5/31) with Emilyn Brodsky, Colour Me Wednesday, The Goodbye Party, and Bellows. All tour dates are listed below.

After those shows, Colour Me Wednesday will hang around for NYC Popfest, which they play on June 1 at Littlefield with The Popguns, The Spook School, Heathers, Gold-Bears, The New Lines, Pam & Bart, Marine Life and Lost Tapes (tickets).

Martha also play Popfest. Their show happens on Thursday (5/29) at Cake Shop with Dressy Bessy, The Besties, Tape Waves, Franny and Zooey, and DJ Kip Berman of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (tickets).

In between The Goodbye Party‘s shows with Spoonboy, The Ambulars will be playing a few dates as well. Those include NYC on June 18 at Shea Stadium with Vasudeva, County Drop and Life Eaters and a TBA Brooklyn show on Sunday (6/1). TGP is also working on an LP to come out this summer via Salinas.
