St Vincent debuts new song "LA" in Tokyo (watch)

St Vincent played her first set of 2017 on Saturday (8/19) at Hostess Club All Nighter at Tokyo’s Summer Sonic Festival. Along with songs from throughout her discography, including “Now Now,” from her 2007 debut Marry Me, “The Strangers” from 2009’s Actor, “Cruel” and “Cheerleader” from 2011’s Strange Mercy, and “Digital Witness from 2014’s self-titled, Annie Clark played her most recent release, “New York,” and debuted a brand new song, “LA.” “LA” is one of the new songs referenced in a recent Guardian piece on Annie:

A number of the songs certainly sound as though they pick over the end of a serious relationship, in particular an astonishing meta-epic she has written called LA, which seems to be about a break-up (“How can anybody have you and lose you and not lose their mind, too?”), while at the same time being about a fiercely avant garde musician’s reluctance to do anything as obvious as write about a break-up. “I guess that’s just me, honey, I guess that’s how I’m built,” Clark sings, “I try to write you a love song but it comes out in a melt.”

Details about the followup to 2014’s St Vincent are still forthcoming, but the album is one of our more anticipated albums of fall 2017.

St Vincent embarks on the “Fear the Future” tour this fall, starting with “the world premiere of a technicolor new direction” at the inaugural Los Angeles version of Red Bull Music Academy. She’ll be in NYC in December for a pair of shows at Kings Theatre; the first is sold out, but tickets are on sale for the December 3 show.

The last time St Vincent played in NYC, she debuted “New York” while dressed as a toilet at a benefit for drummer Matt Johnson’s son Jasper at Le Poisson Rouge. The costumes Annie and her band wore were a nod to her feature directorial debut, XX. (Annie also made a brief appearance as Record Store Day Ambassador at Rough Trade earlier this year)

Annie is also continuing her film career; she’s directing a female-led version of Picture of Dorian Gray.
