Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks played 1st of 2 MHOW shows w/ Lithics (pics, setlist)

Stephen Malkmus & The JicksSparkle Hard tour hit Brooklyn on Thursday (6/14) for the first of two nights at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Stephen seemed to be a little under the weather and hoarse, and didn’t talk to the crowd much for the first half of the set but then perked up halfway through. He told a funny story about the old days in Williamsburg in the early ’90s, seeing a Bikini Kill concert on the piers of the Williamsburg waterfront where Ian Svenonius stood up to some punks who were starting trouble.

As for the songs, there was a lot of Sparkle Hard (Jicks bassist Joanna Bolme sang Kim Gordon’s part on “Refute“) plus selected gems from previous records, and two Pavement cuts (“In the Mouth of the Desert” and “No Tan Lines”). The four-song encore ended with first solo LP fave “Jenny and the Ess Dog.” Setlist is below.

Opening the night were fellow Portlanders Lithics who had also brought their icy, jagged post-punk to Union Pool the night before. They and Malkmus play MHOW again tonight (sold out). Pictures from Thursday are in the gallery above.
