Peanut Butter Wolf…
Peanut Butter Wolf

As one commenter pointed out, DOOM‘s upcoming show schedule, in addition to the Pitchfork Festival (which by the way is now sold out of three-day passes), also includes a visit to daylong hip-hop fest Soundset taking place in Shakopee, Minnesota on Sunday, May 24th. Headliners for the concert include Atmosphere, The Pharcyde, Brother Ali, Sage Francis with B. Dolan, and Immortal Technique. Full lineup below. Tickets for the show are on sale.

That fest is being put on in part by Rhymesayers, the label that put out DOOM’s MM..FOOD?. Another of DOOM’s many labels, Stones Throw Records (which put out the rapper’s Madlib collaboration Madvillainy) will have a strong presence in NYC this weekend. Tonight, Friday, May 8th. Stones Throw founder and head Peanut Butter Wolf will perform at the American Museum of Natural History’s monthly One Step Beyond party. Tickets are on sale.

Also on the bill with Peanut Butter Wolf are Stones Throw artists James Pants, Mayer Hawthorne and Dam-Funk. Those three will also be at (Le) Poisson Rouge for a Stones Throw Party on Saturday, May 9th. Tickets are on sale.

Coming up at One Step Beyond: “One Step Beyond finishes their second season with a blow out spectacular with a DJ set by electro pioneer Moby on a new date June 5, 2009 with a DJ set from Holy Ghost! (DFA).”

Soundset 09, year two. Atmosphere, fresh off the success of When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Sh*t Gold, the recent reissue of God Loves Ugly and the 34-city When God Gives You Ugly Tour, come back home to Minnesota to headline Soundset 09. The Pharcyde will play the main stage with the full original line-up including: Imani, Bootie Brown, SlimKid3 and Fatlip. Having not played the Minneapolis area since Rhymesayers released the MM..Food album in 2004, the masked man, MF Doom returns for a rare one-time performance! Freeway, of Roc-A-Fella, and State Property, along with Seattle super producer Jake One, join forces to perform the classics and new material from their upcoming Rhymesayers album, The Stimulus Package. Sage Francis and B. Dolan, co-creators of, are brothers in corporate crime fighting and indie-rap face smashing, will be appearing courtesy of Strange Famous Records. After touring the world, underground legend, revolutionary leader and accomplished battle champion, Immortal Technique brings his political intenseness to Minnesota this May. I’ll Sleep When You Are Dead was declared a four star album and “a symphony of hero-spinning Hip Hop” by AP; El P (a.k.a El Producto) from New York’s own Definitive Jux camp, along with Mr Dibbs & TMQ are confirmed for the main stage. Never Better was declared the “Best Hip Hop Album of 2009″ by Alarm Magazine, Rhymesayers’ own, Doomtree member and local hero P.O.S returns for a second year in a row.

With options of a main stage, Fifth Element stage, DJ tent with a national b-boy/b-girl battle, slow & low custom car show and 3rd Lair skate demo, Soundset is guaranteed to bring the fun for the whole family!

One Step Beyond info

Peanut Butter Wolf (headline)
Chris Manak, aka Peanut Butter Wolf, is a DJ and hip-hop producer from San Jose, California. He has been active since 1989, when he produced a song by Lyrical Prophecy called “You Can’t Swing This.” In 1996, Peanut Butter Wolf formed Stones Throw Records and released its first single, Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf’s “My World Premiere.” Peanut Butter Wolf released his own solo album on Stones Throw, My Vinyl Weighs a Ton, in 1999. Since then, he has nearly given up producing to focus on DJing and executive-producing for his label; his most notable project is Madlib, whose group, Lootpack, he signed in 1998 after hearing their demo on a college radio station. Stones Throw Records raised its visibility in the 2000s with noted hip-hop releases by Madlib’s Quasimoto, Yesterdays New Quintet, Jaylib (J Dilla and Madlib), and Madvillain (MF Doom and Madlib); it also expanded to include funk and hip-hop re-issues and experimental jazz and electronic music.

James Pants
What began as a dream prom night with his hero, DJ and Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf, led to an internship for James Pants at the same label and, eventually, to being signed to the roster and championed as the ‘next big thing’ by none other than Peanut Butter Wolf himself–as well as critics like Busy P, Urb, and XLR8R, and Dazed & Confused magazine. Pants is a purveyor par excellence of that unmistakable “fresh beat”: 80s soul, electro boogie, early rap, new wave, and post-punk disco, all of which can be found on Welcome, for which James plays drums, keys, and guitar and sings.

Mayer Hawthorne
Singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Mayer Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the rich soul and jazz history of the region. Hawthorne counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White among his influences but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland, Jr. “I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs,” says Peanut Butter Wolf. “Sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do.”

Headquartered in the Culver City section of L.A., dãm-funk spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-’80s styles of boogie, modern soul, and electro-funk. Boogie funk fans groove to artists like Slave, Aurra, early Prince, and Prelude Records will also get a dose of those groups’ unknown contemporaries–more obscure but equally funk-worthy. Now, dãm-funk is working on original “modern-funk” compositions by plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines. Stones Throw Records’ like-minded honcho, Peanut Butter Wolf, brought dãm onto the team to glide into the future with his unique, synth- and bass-driven vibe.
