stream Japanese Breakfast’s new song “Essentially”

Japanese Breakfast has released her first new single in two years, “Essentially,” which is for W Hotels’ label W Records’ singles series, and proceeds will benefit the ACLU. JB is the final artist in W Records’ inaugural class, which also includes Amber Mark, Perfume Genius and Roosevelt.

The new song, “Essentially,” was recorded in the W Sound Suite at W Bali, and it’s the first time a completely original song was created for W Records. JB leader Michelle Zauner says, “I was originally going to record a different song but decided to write something on the fly once I arrived in Bali. I like the challenge of writing and arranging quickly and intuitively sometimes, and I had just bought a native instruments machine and wanted to explore a lot of the sample libraries it came with and work on the synths that were at the studio. It was a very idyllic place to work. I usually record in cold studios, so Bali was a pretty glamorous change. I felt so lucky the day I arrived just walking around the hotel.” The song is very much in the ’80s-style electronic dream pop realm that a lot of JB’s best songs are, as you can hear for yourself below. JB has a second single for W Records on the way too.

Japanese Breakfast’s last album was 2017’s great Soft Sounds From Another Planet on Dead Oceans. Hopefully we’ll find out about a followup soon.

JB also has a bunch of tour dates coming up, including a free SummerStage at Central Park show on June 24, NJ’s XPoNential Music Festival, Red Rocks with Interpol, and more. All dates are listed below.
