stream Mothpuppy's 'Cool & Pretty'
Baltimore’s current DIY music scene is thriving, with great new bands like Post Pink to Snail Mail popping up all the time. Here’s another new one to add to the list: Mothpuppy, featuring former Snail Mail members Ryan Vieira and Shawn Durham.
They recently released their first full-band album, Cool & Pretty via Sad Cactus Records, produced by Hop Along’s Joe Reinhart. Singer Morgan Murphy’s velvety voice draws you in, paired beautifully with personal lyrics about their struggles with gender roles, sexism, self-doubt and body dysmorphia.
Among the standouts are “Flea,” an emotional song that examines the mortality of a bug in a poetic way, embellished by a harmonious pair of guitar with violin, and “Abbreviation,” which quickly shifts from soft and solemn to a dynamic, fast-paced drum-heavy track with bassist Ryan growling as Morgan’s voice quivers filled with emotion, switching back again to that initial softness.
