Reunited indie/emo vets Pohgoh are releasing their first album in 20 years, Secret Club, this Friday (9/7) via New Granada (pre-order), and we’re premiering a stream of the whole album ahead of its release. The sound that Pohgoh helped define in the ’90s remains very influential today, and Secret Club has some echoes of Pohgoh’s past but it also sounds like a very modern record that fits in with a lot of great current bands. In addition to containing hints of Pohgoh’s own ’90s album In Memory of Bab, Secret Club has moments that remind me of ’90s-era Get Up Kids and Pohgoh’s old pals Rainer Maria, as well as moments that remind of Waxahatchee and TWIABP. It’s got crisp, modern production (courtesy of another vet, Jawbox’s J Robbins), and Susie Ulrey’s voice sounds even sharper today than it did two decades ago. Longtime fans should find Secret Club very satisfying, and if you’re new to Pohgoh but you dig some of the other aforementioned bands, this new album isn’t a bad place to start at all. Here’s what drummer Keith Ulrey tells us about it:

If someone had told us 20 years ago that we’d be releasing another album in 2018, we would have said you’re nuts. So far this ride has been a lot of fun and we’ve enjoyed the last couple years playing and recording again. This album represents our lives over the last two decades, growing older and dealing with some extraordinary ups and downs while continuing to always have music at the center of our lives.

Pohgoh also have upcoming tour dates, including two in the NYC-area: Manhattan’s Mercury Lounge on 9/19 (tickets) and NJ’s Asbury Park Brewery on 9/20 (tickets). Making the Mercury Lounge show even more exciting, it’s one of two dates on this tour with support from Rainer Maria singer Caithlin De Marrais. All dates (including The Fest) are listed below.
